National Volunteers Week

National Volunteers Week

JUNE 1 to 7, 2010 is National Volunteers Week and LHFH has 10,000 reasons to celebrate.

That's approximately how many volunteers have given their time freely at LHFH, helping to build low-cost homes for families on modest incomes.

Volunteers' Week is an annual event which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK. The Week plays a huge part in raising the profile of the millions of volunteers who regularly contribute to society, while inspiring others to get involved too.

Two in every 10 volunteers at Liverpool Habitat for Humanity have come from overseas, representing nearly 60 different countries of the world; and 40% of the volunteer builders have been women.

Sarah Shaw, volunteer coordinator at LHFH, says: "Our volunteers are a mix of individuals, corporate volunteers, students and community, interest and faith groups. They get involved in nearly all aspects of construction and have contributed to keeping the costs of the houses down.

"An added value for the individuals and the community at large is the breaking down of barriers when people from all sectors of society work together towards a common goal. Learning new skills also empowers individuals to grow in confidence and knowledge."
Liverpool Habitat for Humanity is building 32 homes off Kingsley Road, in the Granby-Toxteth district of Liverpool. Nine homes are build-complete and the charity is preparing to launch the next phase of construction, for which a regular supply of volunteers will be required.

"Anyone can volunteer, provided they are aged 18 or over and have the motivation and enthusiasm to participate. No previous building skills or experience are required as all the necessary supervision is provided," Sarah added.

As well as helping to build the homes there are also opportunities to volunteer with LHFH for administrative tasks, marketing or fundraising. The site also provides the ideal corporate team-build experience for companies looking for new and interesting ways to challenge and motivate their staff.

The team at LHFH would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have contributed to this project, without your help it would not be possible. Thanks you!
